You’re invited to CenterForLit’s first annual Shakespeare Family Camp for 7th-12th grade students and their parents! We would love to have our Online Academy join us in person to take part in a live performance of the Scottish play – Shakespeare’s classic, Macbeth.

Beginning in February, we will invite all cast members to meet online once a month to discuss, memorize, and study Macbeth. Then all registrants and their parents will come to beautiful Camp Spalding in Pend Oreille County, Washington from May 24th-28th, 2023 for 4 nights/3 days of fun. We’ll build sets, fit costumes, rehearse Shakespeare, and put all our practice together on the stage! And, of course, there will be campfires, s’mores, swimming, games, and a rollicking good time with the entire CenterForLit crew!

This event will cost $650 per person, which includes room and board for your stay.

Online Class Details:

  • Instructors: Megan and Emily Andrews

  • Schedule: Four 2-hour workshops (see full schedule below) are held at 1:00 PM Pacific Time (4:00 PM Eastern) on Thursdays

  • Live webinars: Online meeting software (included in tuition) provides screen sharing and live audio and video with chat. Students raise hands to participate aloud, chat with instructors, and see instructors via live video.

  • Conversation boards: After each class, students will complete brief assignments designed to help them in the memorization and interpretation of their roles. These assignments may take different forms including (but not limited to): contributions to a chat-style conversation about their particular role, short video submissions of their own as documentation of their progress, or brief analysis exercises to help them understand their character. All contributions are monitored by course instructors.

  • Recordings: High quality audio/video recordings of each class (with discussion notes in PDF format) allow students to participate asynchronously if necessary. Students receive an email invitation to join the student database, where they have access to recordings and notes from each discussion. As this is a performance-based class, live attendance and participation is strongly encouraged!

  • Grades and Credits (optional): Attendees receive regular report cards upon request. 9th-12th grade students earn one High School credit in literature.

  • Tuition: $650 tuition covers both the live classes and room/board for the weekend event in May.

  • Costumes: “Bring your dad’s bathrobe!” Students will be responsible for gathering materials for their own costumes over the course of the semester. They will bring their supplies to the camp where our staff will help them to put together their ensemble and coach them in basic costume/makeup and set design.

  • Casting: All registered students are guaranteed a speaking role in the production. Dependent on registration numbers, we may have multiple casts for the show. More information on casting TBA.
