WHAT IS CENTER FOR LIT?

Our "neck of the woods"

Our "neck of the woods"

In 2003, Missy Andrews took a dare. A friend challenged her to show the parents in their homeschool co-op how to teach literature without a college degree, and she accepted.  The method she devised became famous as Teaching the Classics, the teacher- training seminar that now equips parents and teachers all over the world to pass on the art of reading to their students.

Missy and her husband Adam founded CenterForLit shortly thereafter and began sharing the simple principles of Teaching the Classics with parents and teachers at conventions and speaking engagements nationwide.

CenterForLit now offers curriculum materials, online classes, live teacher-training, and parent-teacher support networks, all dedicated to helping readers understand and revel in the beauty of classic books. The world’s great literature contains the wisdom of the ages – a treasure worth seeking.  To readers who lack the proper tools, however, that treasure often remains locked away and hidden from sight. Our mission is to supply you, the treasure seeker, with the right maps and keys.

WHO ARE WE?

The Andrews family. Adam and Missy graduated from Hillsdale College in the spring of 1991 and married a few days later. Missy has worked tirelessly to homeschool all of her six rambunctious, opinionated, wonderful children, and now only has one high-schooler left at home. The five oldest all went on to study at Hillsdale College. Ian graduated with his BA in 2014, and Megan graduated in 2016.

While at Hillsdale Ian met Emily, who conveniently also studied English Literature at Hillsdale. Ian and Emily married in the autumn following their graduation, and now run the administration of CenterForLit.

The kids are grown up, but we all still love to sit around the dinner table during holidays and breaks and loudly debate about everything, from football to Great Ideas.

The Andrews home perches on the heights of the Huckleberry Mountains in eastern Washington state. We hunt and snowboard and generally pretend at being rugged and athletic, but the truth is that most of us would much rather curl up with a mug of tea and a good book.

We're glad you stopped by!  If you have questions or comments for any of us, please let us know!
