Join Adam and Missy Andrews for a weekend of inspiration and encouragement as they present Teaching the Classics: A Socratic Method for Literary Education in Hillsdale, Michigan on August 16-17, 2019. Teaching the Classics presents a step-by-step method for reading, analyzing, and discussing literature with students of all ages. Learn it once, and you can use it over and over with any story in the world. The two-day seminar provides everything you need to get started:



Eight sessions featuring lecture, discussion, and practice on the following topics:

  • Tools for Literary Analysis

  • Style and Context – with a story by H.W. Longfellow

  • Setting – with a story by Rudyard Kipling

  • Characterization – with a story by Mark Twain

  • Conflict & Plot – with a story by Russell Hoban

  • Theme – with a story by Lynd Ward

  • Classroom Techniques – with a story by E.L. Thayer

  • Curriculum Design

A detailed course syllabus notebook with additional resources, including:

  • Center For Lit’s exclusive Socratic List – 173 graded discussion questions for use with any story

  • Discussion notes for each seminar session

  • The full text of an example story for each session

  • Annotated reading lists for students of all grade levels

  • A bibliography of commonly used literary devices and their definitions

  • Reproducible story charts for use in the classroom

  • Friday August 16 – 7:00 to 9:00 PM, Hillsdale Academy

Instructors:

Adam and Missy Andrews graduated from Hillsdale College in 1991. Adam went on to earn his MA from the University of Washington, where is a candidate for the PhD in history. Missy earned her MA from Harrison Middleton University while still a full-time homeschool mom. Adam and Missy live on a mountaintop in Rice, Washington, where they have homeschooled all six of their children.
