Welcome! We are so pleased that you are joining us for this week-long immersion in Jane Austen's beloved masterpiece. While critics have both condemned and praised Austen's limited artistic scope, we think you will not be disappointed by any lack of depth or content in this study. Although as an author her gaze never penetrates beyond the close boundaries of the family, the neighborhood, and the local, Austen's narrow focus purposely presents us with an extremely skillful and perceptive vision of human nature and the human condition. She gives us much to think about touching the atmosphere and culture of Regency England, but also offers a timeless vision of what it means to live as a human being in the world with all of its little contradictions and ironies.
