Here's How it Works:
First, students read a pre-determined list of classic books (see below). Then, using free GoToWebinar technology, they log in for a two-hour discussion of each title. Discussions are personally led by Adam & Missy Andrews and provide comprehensive treatment of the story, covering Plot, Conflict, Setting, Characters, Theme, Literary Devices, Context and more. GoToWebinar allows students to participate as much as they like by "raising hands" and joining the conversation via telephone or VOIP, answering in-class surveys and using a live chat box.
There are no after-class assignments, no homework (other than the reading), no papers and no tests; these classes are designed to encourage a love of literature by providing lively discussions of ideas in a low-pressure environment. Written verification of attendance and participation is available for transcript purposes. Additionally, each student receives access to a downloadable, high quality audio recording of each class along with complete discussion notes in PDF format.
When and Where?
Discussions are held from 4:30 to 6:30 PM Pacific Time on the dates listed below.
How Do I Register?
CenterForLit has teamed up with Outstanding Academic Opportunities, a California non-profit corporation, to make these classes available. To register, visit the OAO website by clicking one of the links below.
What About Books?
Since the course focuses on classic literature, most titles are available at local libraries. Students who decide to purchase their own copies will find just about any unabridged edition to be suitable. Clicking one of the title links below will take you to our preferred edition at amazon.com, where you can purchase the book or copy the ISBN number for your own use.
